Big Brew, the annual Bay Area Society of Homebrewers (B.A.S.H.) celebration of National Homebrew Day was held on Saturday, May 6 at B&J’s Pizza on Staples at Timbergate. A demonstration brew was performed. Recipes were provided by the American Homebrewers Association (AHA) for all-grain and extract versions of “Nearly Nirvana” pale ale . Wild Bill Lehfeld supplied the ingredients, courtesy of the clubs burgeoning treasury. One of the club canopies provided shade while battling gusty winds.
At high noon, club president Victor Aguilar led us in the global synchronized toast to homebrewing and a second toast in memory of Paul Holder. We feasted on B&J’s delicious pizza and cold beer during the afternoon as we fielded questions from curious onlookers.
Vic mashed the recipes separately, using a two-burner propane-fired system. The two batches of wort were then combined into a single hybrid batch for the 90-minute boil. Hops were introduced during four staged additions. The activities wrapped up by 5:00 p.m. Vic took the brew home to add yeast. Join us at the July meeting to sample the results.
