August 2020 Meeting Minutes

William Lee hosted the August, 2020 B.A.S.H. meeting AND POOL PARTY on Sunday the 9th at his home in Corpus Christi.

El Presidente Jack Heim called the meeting to order, thanked our host and welcomed guest Garrett. Walt Crawford gave a glowing treasury report. We gained four new members at the 8/8 social at Nueces Brewing and now have 32 paid members. We had a lengthy Iron Mash discussion. At next months’ meeting we will need volunteers to step forward with brewing systems for Iron Mash. We will then build the teams around the brew systems.

The competition this month (the first of the 2021 competition season) was for > 50% extract beers only, open to any beer style. With three competitors, the winning beer receives two HBOY points (doubled for extract), 2nd place receives two HBOY points (doubled for extract) third place receives one HBOY point (doubled for extract) and fourth place and beyond receive no points. Judges scores for the six entries were as follows:

  1. James Fowler – Weissbier (BJCP 10A) 39.0/50 – 6 HBOY points

  2. Wild Bill Lehfeld – Mango Australian Sparkling Ale (BJCP 29A/12B) 38.6/50 – 4 HBOY points

  3. James Fowler – Irish Red Ale (BJCP 15A) 36.8/50 – 2 HBOY points

  4. (tie) Jack Downey/Phil Sims – Irish Red Ale (BJCP 15A) 34.6/50 – 0 HBOY points

  5. (tie) Wild Bill Lehfeld –Apricot Witbier (BJCP 29A/24A) 34.6/50 – 0 HBOY points

  6. Wild Bill Lehfeld – Strawberry American Wheat Ale (BJCP 29A/1D) 33.3/50 – 0 HBOY points

James’ Weissbier thus advances to the upcoming Best Of Show round.

After adjourning we wolfed down William’s pulled pork sandwiches and pork ribs. Besides the competition beers we enjoyed one new homebrew – Walt’s double IPA. Commercial beers in evidence included William’s Altstadt Kolsch and Ed Fontein’s Dos Equis Special Lager. As we finished the feast, the following discussion occurred:

Paul Holder – “Are you trying to get me drunk”?

Walt – “Why not? I didn’t come here just to stand around”!

Then it was on to the pool for a cool off, shampoo (Phil and Wild Bill didn’t use much) and massive homebrew inventory reduction …
