August 2021 Meeting Minutes

William Lee hosted the August, 2021 B.A.S.H. meeting AND POOL PARTY on Sunday the 8th at his home in Corpus Christi.

President Lara Busch called the meeting to order and thanked our host. The meeting was thankfully brief, with discussion about the upcoming Classic Brew and Iron Mash. Lazy Beach is having their 2nd annual fun run/walk at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, August 14. The run is 5k and the walk is 2 miles. Entry fee is $30 beginning 8/9.

The competition this month (the first of the 2022 competition season) was open to any beer style, with fruit beers (BJCP 29A–C) eligible for double Homebrewer Of The Year points. With four competitors, the winning beer receives three HBOY points (doubled for fruit beer), 2nd place receives two HBOY points (doubled for fruit beers) third place receives one HBOY point (doubled for fruit beers) and fourth place and beyond receive no points. Judges scores for the six entries were as follows:

  1. Paul Holder – Raspberry American Wheat (BJCP 29A/1D) 36.4/50 – 6 HBOY points

  2. Wild Bill Lehfeld – Cherry American Porter (BJCP 29A/20A) 35.2/50 – 4 HBOY points

  3. Wild Bill Lehfeld – Mango American Pale Ale (BJCP 29A/18B) 32.3/50 – 2 HBOY points

  4. James Fowler – Mango Blonde Ale (BJCP 29A/18A) 31.4/50 – 0 HBOY points

  5. John Fulton –Oat Lager (BJCP 34C) 28.0/50 – 0 HBOY points

Paul’s Raspberry Wheat thus advances to the upcoming Best Of Show round.

As we feasted on William’s hamburgers, bratwursts and sausages we enjoyed new homebrews from Chris Ackman (Passionfruit Hard Seltzer), James (Helles Bock), Paul (Bavarian Hefeweizen) and William (Imperial Kölsch). A huge variety of commercial beers were enjoyed, including Parker Brown’s Toppling Goliath King Sue DIPA/Pseudo Sue Pale Ale, J.D. Busch’s Saloon Door Lava Imperial Hot Rock Beer, Jack Heim’s Sierra Nevada Torpedo, James’ Karbach Love Street and Rusty Keyes’ Real Ale Axis IPA. Tim Grace and Mary Kay Schultz unleashed a torrent of interesting canned beers as well.

The usual hijinks ensued in William’s pool, highlighted by Lou Needleman’s confession – “I’m high maintenance”! Say it ain’t so, Doc!
