Big Brew, the annual Bay Area Society of Homebrewers (B.A.S.H.) celebration of National Homebrew Day was held on Saturday, May 1 at B&J’s Pizza on Staples at Timbergate. The club shade canopies blocked the pesky rain. Two teams performed demonstration brews. Vic Aguilar used his propane-fired system to make one of this years’ recipes provided by the American Homebrewers Association (AHA) – “Janet’s Brown Ale”, assisted by Lara Busch. Tim Grace used his Grainfather electric brew system to make the other AHA recipe – “Star Gazer Double IPA”.
Members of the general public poked their heads under the canopies from time to time to observe and learn about the hobby. We managed to snare a couple of new members – Jay Porterfield and John Brett, besides welcoming international traveler Vic back to the fold. At exactly high noon, Paul Holder led us in the global synchronized toast to homebrewing. We feasted on B&J’s delicious pizza and cold beer during the event.
The festivities wrapped by 4:00 p.m. The teams took their brews home to add yeast. Join us at the July meeting to sample the results.
