Paul Holder hosted the July, 2020 B.A.S.H. meeting on Sunday the 12th at B&J’s Pizza on Staples at Timbergate.
New President Jack Heim called the meeting to order thanked our hosts B&J’s and Paul, and welcomed new member Ed Fontaine. Including Ed, 13 members were in attendance. Besides Jack, officers beginning service for the 2021 fiscal year are: Vice President for Competitions – Tim Grace, Vice President for Social Events, Mary Kay Schultz, Secretary – Wild Bill Lehfeld, Treasurer – Walt Crawford, Webmeister For Life – Chris Ackman.
The competition this month was open to any beer style. The declared style for Homebrewer of the Year was High Gravity Challenge > 10% ABV. With two competitors, the winning beer receives two HBOY points (doubled if it is of the declared style), 2nd place receives one HBOY point (doubled if of the declared style) and third place and beyond receive no points. Judges scores for the five entries were as follows:

Wild Bill Lehfeld – >10% Belgian Dark Strong Ale (BJCP 26D) 39.75/50 – 2 HBOY points

Chris Ackman – >10% Imperial Stout (BJCP 20C) 33/50 – 0 HBOY points
Chris Ackman –American Brown Ale (BJCP 19C) 31.5/50 – 0 HBOY points
Wild Bill’s Baltic Porter thus advances to the upcoming Best Of Show round.
After 6 of 6 competitions in the 2020 competition season, cumulative HBOY results are as follows:

Wild Bill is thus the 2020 Homebrewer of the Year. The 2021 season begins with the August competition.
The proposed competition schedule for 2/2022 through 6/2023 was approved: 2/22 – Irish stout (BJCP 15B), 4/22 – Low Gravity Challenge (<5% ABV Must Provide OG/FG), 6/22 -- Czech pale lager and premium pale lager (BJCP 3A,B), 8/22 -- Extract Challenge (any style, >51% extract), 10/22 – Weissbier (BJCP 10A), 11/22 – old ale, wee heavy ale (BJCP 17B,C), 2/23 – British bitter (BJCP 11A-C), 4/23 -- High Gravity Challenge > 10% ABV (must provide OG/FG), 6/23 – helles bock (BJCP 4C). We also approved a motion to amend the competition rules to restrict future extract, high gravity and low gravity competitions to only beers that meet those criteria. In other old business, we approved complimentary memberships for the 2021 fiscal year for Jack and Kathy Baker (B&J’s Pizza), Cory and Jess Mathews (Lazy Beach Brewing), Kyle Hotz (CC Homebrew Supply) and Cale (Nueces Brewing). The complimentary members would not enjoy voting rights until attending a meeting. Mary Kay will develop framed recognition posters.
As we feasted on B&J’s delicious pizza (courtesy of Paul), we reflected on the following overheard comments:
