Tim Grace and Mary Kay Schultz hosted the April, 2021 B.A.S.H. meeting on Sunday the 11th at their home in Corpus Christi.
El Presidente Jack Heim called the meeting to order, thanked our hosts and welcomed back John and Nikki Daniels, Martha and Adriana Knight and Richard and Liza Ramos. Treasurer Walt Crawford babbled for a minute or so, then went silent. Mary Kay announced the April social at Aerodrome Distillery at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday the 24th. Most of the discussion dealt with the upcoming AHA Big Brew on Saturday, May 1 at Nueces Brewing. A team led by J.D. Busch will brew the Janet’s Brown Ale and Tim’s crew will brew the Star Gazer Double IPA. Paul Holder will supply the ingredients. Plan to arrive by 11am to avoid traffic/parking issues from the Blue Angels’ show that afternoon.
The competition this month was for any beer with at least 51% extract, open to any style. With more than three competitors, the winning beer receives three Homebrewer of the Year points (doubled for extract), 2nd place receives two HBOY points (doubled for extract), third place receives one HBOY point (doubled for extract) and 4th place and beyond receive no points. Six beers were entered. Judges’ results were as follows:
Wild Bill Lehfeld – Tropical Stout (BJCP 16C) 36.9/50 – 6 HBOY points
Wild Bill Lehfeld – Roggenbier (BJCP 27) 36.8/50 – 4 HBOY points
Chris Ackman – Winter Seasonal Beer (BJCP 30C) 34.2/50 – 2 HBOY points

Richard Ramos – Chocolate Stout (BJCP 34C) 31.5/50 – 0 HBOY points
John Daniels – Yuengling Lager Clone (BJCP 1B) 29.8/50 – 0 HBOY points
Wild Bill’s Tropical Stout thus advances to the upcoming Best of Show round.

Wild Bill Lehfeld – 29 HBOY points
James Fowler – 8 HBOY points
Chris Ackman – 6 HBOY points

We then feasted on a shrimp boil, washed down with competition beers and new homebrews from Paul Holder (rye IPA), Tom Ormrod (Kolsch/Belgian Tripel) and Richard (Mosaic SMASH IPA). Interesting commercial beers include Lara Busch’s Nueces Mango Gose and Citramatic, Jacob Dunson’s Martin House Best Maid Sour Pickle Beer, John Fulton’s Lakewood Temptress and Mary Kay’s T Rose IPA and Banger Brewing Coffee Kolsch.
Random comments overheard toward the end of the festivities:
Paul – “What do you think of my Wicked Hazy IPA?” Walt – “Even the dregs are good!”
Walt – “Hey, for twenty dollars I’ve done worse than that!”
