April 2023 Meeting Minutes

Tim Grace and Mary Kay Schultz hosted the April, 2023 B.A.S.H. meeting on Sunday the 16th at their loft in downtown Corpus Christi.

President Vic Aguilar called the meeting to order, thanked our hosts and welcomed guests Monica and Marty from San Antonio. Treasurer Walt Crawford gave another glowing report but failed to bring home a winning lottery ticket.

Our tally of brewing volume for March, 2023 is as follows: Chris Ackman – 5 gallons, Vic – 10 gallons (February), Walt – 5 gallons, Wild Bill Lehfeld – 5 gallons, Tom Ormrod – 12.5 gallons, Jay Porterfield -- 6 gallons, Andy Vaughn – 15 gallons.

YTD totals for 2023: Chris Ackman – 10 gallons, Vic Aguilar – 25 gallons, Roger Barnaby – 5 gallons, Dave & Kathy Clark – 5 gallons, Walt Crawford – 5 gallons, Jason Fransham – 33.25 gallons, Nick Jones – 5 gallons, Wild Bill Lehfeld– 10 gallons, Tom Ormrod – 32.5 gallons, Jay Porterfield – 6 gallons, Andy Vaughn – 35 gallons. Total YTD = 171.75 gallons beer.

The competition this month was the High Gravity Challenge >10% ABV, conducted by competition director Mark Woerner and narrated by Dave Clark, a Flemish lad from the little village of Ghent. As all entries were required to be high gravity, medaling beers receive double Homebrewer of the Year points. With four competitors, the winning beer receives three Homebrewer of the Year points (doubled for high gravity), 2nd place receives two HBOY points (doubled for high gravity), third place receives one HBOY point (doubled for high gravity) and 4th place and beyond receive no points. Six beers were entered. Judges’ results were as follows:

1. Wild Bill – Belgian Dark Strong Ale (BJCP 26D) 41.25/50 – 6 HBOY points

2. Jason – Belgian Dark Strong Ale (BJCP 26D) 40.75/50 – 4 HBOY points

3. Andy – Double IPA (BJCP 22A) 39.5/50 – 2 HBOY points

4. Tom – Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Stout (BJCP 16A) 37.75/50 – 0 HBOY points

5. (tie) Tom – Russian Imperial Stout w/ Maple (BJCP 20C) 36.75/50 – 0 HBOY points

5. (tie) Wild Bill – Belgian Golden Strong Ale (BJCP 25C) 38/50 – 0 HBOY points

After 5 of 6 competitions in the 2023 competition year, cumulative results are as follows:

  1. Wild Bill Lehfeld – 25 HBOY points

  2. Jason Fransham – 13 HBOY points

  3. Chris Ackman – 4 HBOY points

  4. John Fulton – 3 HBOY points

  5. Rusty Keyes – 3 HBOY points

  6. Andy Vaughn – 2 HBOY points

  7. Tom Ormrod – 1 HBOY point

As we feasted on crawfish/shrimp stew, we enjoyed the competition beers and new homebrews from Walt (IPA) and Tom (salted caramel brown ale). Interesting commercial beers included Chris’ Baja Brewing ¡Ay Ay IPA! Session IPA, Vic’s Tupps Juice Punk DDHPA/Elysian Full Contact Imperial Hazy IPA, Jay’s Bandera Scotch Ale, Mary Kay’s No Coast Crazy Beaches Hazy Coconut IPA/Phase Three Maibock,
