February 2022 Meeting Minutes

Updated: Mar 22, 2022

Chris and Elizabeth Ackman hosted the February, 2022 B.A.S.H. meeting on Sunday the 20th at their home in Portland.

President Lara Busch called the meeting to order and thanked our hosts. Walt Crawford and Wild Bill Lehfeld presented brief treasurer’s and secretary’s reports. Mary Kay Schultz is looking at possible socials at the greyhound track and at CC Hooks baseball. She will also contact local breweries about hosting education events and will discuss a B.A.S.H. brew session with Lazy Beach. Everyone thanked Liza Ramos for the new name tags!

The competition this month was open to any style. Entries of the declared style (Irish stout, BJCP 15B) were eligible for double Homebrewer Of the Year points. With three competitors, the winning brew receives three Homebrewer of the Year points (doubled for Irish stout), 2nd place receives two HBOY points (doubled for Irish stout), third place receives one HBOY point (doubled for Irish stout), and fourth place and beyond receive no points. Five brews were entered. Judges’ results were as follows:

  1. Paul Holder – Experimental vanilla bourbon porter (BJCP 34C) 39.7/50 – 3 HBOY points

  2. Paul Holder – English brown ale (BJCP 13B) 34.2/50 – 2 HBOY points

  3. Wild Bill Lehfeld – Saison (BJCP 25B) 32.2/50 – 1 HBOY points

  4. Victor Aguilar – Witbier (BJCP 24A) 31.5/50 – 0 HBOY points

  5. Wild Bill Lehfeld – Irish stout (BJCP 15B) 29.7/50 – 0 HBOY points

Paul’s vanilla bourbon porter thus advances to the upcoming Best of Show round.

After 4 of 6 competitions in the 2022 competition season, cumulative HBOY results are as follows:

  1. Paul Holder – 19 HBOY points

  2. Wild Bill Lehfeld – 11 HBOY points

  3. Mike Terrenzi – 2 HBOY points

  4. James Fowler – 0 HBOY points

  5. John Fulton – 0 HBOY points

  6. Victor Aguilar – 0 HBOY points

Interesting commercial beers included Lara’s Hisign El Berto Mexican Lager, Tim Grace’s Waterfront Crazy Lady Honey Blonde from Key West, Paul’s Half Acre Daisy Cutter Pale Ale/Bell’s Rind Over Matter Wheat Ale and Mary Kay’s Islamorada Coconut Key Lime Ale.
