January 2024 Meeting Minutes

Chris and Elizabeth Ackman hosted the January 2024 B.A.S.H. meeting on Sunday the 14th at their home in Portland.

President Jack Heim called the meeting to order, thanked our hosts and welcomed new member Joe Wyatt. Walt Crawford presented the Treasurer’s report.

In his secretary’s report, Wild Bill Lehfeld reviewed upcoming meeting hosts and competitions. Our tally of brewing volume for December, 2023 was as follows: Vic Aguilar – 6 gallons, Jason Fransham – 5 gallons, Wild Bill – 2.5 gallons, Joe Wyatt – 3 gallons mead. YTD totals for 2023: Chris Ackman – 25 gallons, Vic Aguilar – 50 gallons, Roger Barnaby – 5 gallons, Big Brew – 15 gallons, Dave & Kathy Clark – 20 gallons, Walt Crawford – 5 gallons, Jason Fransham – 68 gallons, John Fulton – 15 gallons, Iron Mash – 15 gallons, Nick Jones – 5 gallons, Sabrina Krueger – 18.5 gallons, Wild Bill Lehfeld – 27.5 gallons, Tom Ormrod – 104 gallons, Jay Porterfield – 11 gallons, Andy Vaughn – 55 gallons, Jon Watson – 10 gallons, Joe Wyatt – 3 gallons mead. Total for 2023 = 452 gallons beer and mead (489 gallons beer, wine and mead in 2022).

The competition this month was Iron Mash XX. Three teams accepted the challenge on November 4th and concocted a recipe from a box of ingredients. The resulting beers were all very drinkable according to the elite judging crew. Results are as follows:

  1. Hop Goblins – American Strong Ale (BJCP 22B) 40.5/50

  2. Tiger Brewing – English Porter (BJCP 13C) 38/50

  3. The Grain Weevils – Czech Premium Pale Lager (BJCP 3B) 37/50

The Hop Goblins are thus Iron Mash XX champions, retain the Iron Mash Cup earned last year and will be forever honored on the Iron Mash plaque at Lazy Beach Brewing.

As we dined on Banh Mi sandwiches and pancit, we enjoyed the Iron Mash beers and new homebrews from Vic (“Flat Tire” pale ale) and Joe (cherry mead). Among the interesting commercial beers were Jason’s Lone Pint Imperial SMASH Beer/Long Tab Kölsch, Tim Grace’s Phase Three P3 Pils and Mary Kay Schultz’s Tenaya Creek Gypsy Fade IPA.

Comments overheard from our recent San Antonio brewery tour:

Jack – “We didn’t have vans for our brewery tour but we drank past that”.

Liz – “We drank a fu@k ton of beer”!

Wild Bill – “How much is a fu@k ton”?

Liz – “Two s4!t loads”.
