Martha and Adriana Knight hosted the June, 2021 B.A.S.H. meeting on Sunday the 13th at their home in Corpus Christi.
While El Presidente Jack Heim was gathering the competition beers, Paul Holder called the meeting to order, thanked our hosts and welcomed visiting neighbors. Our treasury balance is at a seasonal low ebb, ready for the massive influx of 2022 dues at next month’s meeting. In old business, we discussed the successful Big Brew held last month and learned that one of the fermenting beers was accidentally discarded! We will sample the other finished beer at the July meeting. In new business, we elected new president Lara Busch and reelected the remaining officers for the upcoming 2021-2022 fiscal year.
The competition this month was open to any style. Entries of the declared style (German wheat beers, BJCP 10A-C) were eligible for double Homebrewer Of the Year points. With more than three competitors, the winning beer receives three Homebrewer of the Year points (doubled for German wheat), 2nd place receives two HBOY points (doubled for German wheat), third place receives one HBOY point (doubled for German wheat) and 4th place and beyond receive no points. Eight beers were entered. Judges’ results were as follows:
Ron Merriman – American Blonde Ale (BJCP 18A) 34.8/50 – 3 HBOY points
Wild Bill Lehfeld – Weissbier (BJCP 10A) 34.6/50 – 4 HBOY points
Ron Merriman – Belgian Dark Strong Ale (BJCP 26D) 33.5/50 – 1 HBOY points
Rusty Keyes – Witbier (BJCP 24A) 32.8/50 – 0 HBOY points
Vic Aguilar – Jalapeno Irish Red Ale (BJCP 30A/15A) 31.8/50 – 0 HBOY points
Wild Bill Lehfeld – Dunkles Weissbier (BJCP 10B) 31.5/50 – 0 HBOY points
Tom Ormrod – Weissbier (BJCP 10A) 30.1/50 – 0 HBOY points
Vic Aguilar – Historical Molasses Beer (BJCP 27/31B/34C) 28.6/50 – 0 HBOY points
Ron’s American Blonde Ale thus advances to the upcoming Best of Show round.
After 6 of 6 competitions in the 2021 competition season, cumulative HBOY results are as follows:
Wild Bill Lehfeld – 33 HBOY points
James Fowler – 8 HBOY points
Chris Ackman – 6 HBOY points
Ron Merriman – 4 HBOY points
John Fulton – 2 HBOY points
Mark Quade – 2 HBOY points
William Lee – 2 HBOY points
Jack Downey/Phil Sims – 0 HBOY points
Richard Ramos – 0 HBOY points
John Daniels – 0 HBOY points
Rusty Keyes – 0 HBOY points
Vic Aguilar – 0 HBOY points
Tom Ormrod – 0 HBOY points
Wild Bill is thus 2021 Homebrewer Of The Year. The 2022 competition year begins with the August meeting.
We feasted on brisket and pork loin, washed down with competition beers and new homebrews from Paul (coffee porter) and Tom (salted caramel ale). Interesting commercial beers included Lara’s Hopworks Juicy Bear IPA/Blue Owl Tangerina Milkshake Sour IPA and Mark Quade’s Founder’s Blushing Monk Raspberry Sour.
