October 2023 Meeting Minutes

Jack and Karen Heim hosted the October 2023 B.A.S.H. meeting on Sunday the 8th at their home in Corpus Christi.

President Jack Heim called the meeting to order, thanked our host and welcomed new member John Feng, USMC. Walt Crawford presented the Treasurer’s report.

In his secretary’s report, Wild Bill Lehfeld reviewed upcoming meeting hosts and competitions. Our tally of brewing volume for September, 2023 was as follows: Chris Ackman – 5 gallons, Dave/Kathy Clark – 5 gallons, Jason Fransham – 7.25 gallons, Wild Bill – 2.5 gallons, Jay Porterfield – 5 gallons. YTD totals for 2023: Chris Ackman – 25 gallons, Vic Aguilar – 44 gallons, Roger Barnaby – 5 gallons, Big Brew – 15 gallons, Dave & Kathy Clark – 20 gallons, Walt Crawford – 5 gallons, Jason Fransham – 48.25 gallons, John Fulton – 10 gallons, Nick Jones – 5 gallons, Sabrina Krueger – 18.5, Wild Bill Lehfeld– 22.5 gallons, Tom Ormrod – 96 gallons, Jay Porterfield – 11 gallons, Andy Vaughn – 45 gallons. Total YTD = 370.25 gallons beer.

In new business, the Clarks discussed upcoming fundraisers for Alzheimer’s and the San Pat County animal shelter (see below). They also agreed to seek a supplier for pocket T shirts and pint koozies. We settled on three teams for Iron Mash XX, based on brew systems from the Clarks, Tom Ormrod and Chris Ackman.

The competition this month was the Extract Challenge, open to any style. With five competitors, 1st place earns 3 Homebrewer of the Year points (doubled for extract), 2nd place earns 2 HBOY points (doubled for extract) 3rd place earns 1 HBOY point (doubled for extract) and 4th place and beyond earn 0 points. Results were as follows:

2. Wild Bill Lehfeld – Schwarzbier (BJCP 8B) 39.8/40 – 4 HBOY points

3. Jason Fransham – Imperial Stout (BJCP 20C) 38/50 – 2 HBOY points

4. Wild Bill Lehfeld – Munich Dunkel (BJCP 8A) 36/50 – 0 HBOY points

5. Chris Ackman – American Stout (BJCP 20B) 35.6/50 – 0 HBOY points

6. Jason Fransham – Strong Bitter (BJCP 11C) 34.6/50 – 0 HBOY points

7. Jay Porterfield – Cream Ale (BJCP 1C) 32.3/50 – 0 HBOY points

8. Dave/Kathy Clark – International Amber Lager (BJCP 2B) 30.6/50 – HBOY points

After 2 of 6 competitions in the 2024 competition year, cumulative results are as follows:

1. Jason Fransham – 11 HBOY points

2. Wild Bill Lehfeld – 5.5 HBOY points

3. John Fulton – 2 HBOY points

4. Chris Ackman – 0 HBOY points

5. Andy Vaughn – 0 HBOY points

As we feasted on pulled pork sliders and pale ale potatos gratin, we reduced homebrew inventory and enjoyed interesting commercial beers from the Clarks (Tucher Festbier), Jack (Sierra Blanca Green Chile Cerveza) and Mark Woerner (Bell’s Two Hearted Ale/Saloon Door I Must Break You).
